Study Claims Aspirin Could Reduce Breast Cancer Risks

There is a new study that offers some good news for people who have breast cancer and those who are high at risk. According to the study published in the Laboratory Investigation journal, aspirin is a promising option for those with breast cancer.

A team of researchers has discovered that one dose of aspirin taken every day could eliminate or at least lower the chances of acquiring breast cancer as well as the spread of the disease.

An In-Depth Look at the Study

The study was performed by researchers who conducted their investigation at the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s oncology unit.

The research team concluded that aspirin could make the cancer cells stop reproducing and eventually stopped growing. While the study was ongoing, the researchers were able to develop cancerous cells and they tried to treat them with aspirin.

It was then that they discovered that those treated with the drug stopped duplicating. More importantly, there were cancer cells that died as soon as they touched aspirin. The study did not end here as the researchers took the investigation one step further by injecting 75 milligrams of aspirin to tumorous mice.

The mice received the drug for half a month. By this time, the researchers had already observed that the subjects had their tumors decrease in size by half.

Meanwhile, those who didn’t receive the treatment did not find any difference in their tumor size or at least weren’t as drastic as those that had aspirin.

What Could This Mean for Breast Cancer Patients?

The results of the study are indeed favorable for those who are suffering from the disease. However, Dr. Sushanta Banerjee, the research director of the Cancer Research Unit where the study was conducted, still warned patients.

According to the doctor, it is important that individuals talk with their trusted health professional before they try the remedy.

In most cases, aspirin is safe, but there are potential side effects, especially since the study suggests the consumption of the drug every day. Side effects include internal bleeding, particularly gastrointestinal bleeding.

Nevertheless, Dr. Banerjee believes that the benefits of daily intake of the drug outweigh the risks, mainly because he has been doing so for the past three years.

According to him, he has yet to experience the negative side effects of aspirin. While this may be true, it is still significant that patients understand there will always be a risk. Consulting your doctor before trying aspirin as treatment for breast cancer is the best way to make sure it is safe for you.
